The Strangford and Lecale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB)

Strangford and Lecale is a coastal AONB, with numerous conservation designations and protections, which tells the story of our glacial past. Its’ stunning natural beauty and distinctive landscape are founded upon one of the world's finest examples of drumlin hill and island landscapes. Hugging the shores on both sides of Strangford Lough, this AONB extends from Scrabo Hill in the north, to Dundrum Bay in the south taking in the western shores of the Ards Peninsula, Downpatrick and the Lecale Coast.

The character of the shores which formed as the ice receded varies, from the extensive mudflats of Strangford Lough (so valuable to the wintering wildfowl) to rocky bays, sweeping sandy strands and soft low cliffs on coasts fringing the Irish Sea. Priority coastal habitats and species in need of conservation and protection can be found within this special place and its' unique landscapes.
