The management of the three Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty (Ring of Gullion, the Mournes and Strangford and Lecale) are pleased to announce the winners of the AONB Photography Competition, and the launch of the AONB Calendar for 2020.

In this collaborative project, Ards and North Down Borough Council and Newry Mourne and Down District Council are pleased to showcase the skills of local photographers and the outstanding qualities of the Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty(AONBs).

There was an excellent response to this competition and it took some deliberation from the judges to choose the winners, but their final winning selections are now brought together in the first ever AONBs Calendar.

The theme for this year’s competition was “The Landscape I Love”, which photographers were free to interpret any way they chose. There were welcomed in 2 age categories: under 14’s and over 14’s.

Mayor of Ards and North Down Borough Council, Alderman Bill Keery, who took part in the judging panel, said:

“The standard of entries in the competition was very high. There were so many strong entries to choose from and it was extremely difficult to select the winners but I’m delighted with the final selection that have now been included in the 2020 AONB calendar.”

“The calendar showcases the wealth of stunningly beautiful scenery we have in County Down. Well done to overall winner, Allan Davies, as well as the under 14 winner, Emily Torrens, and congratulations also to Graham Edgar who was runner-up in the over 14 category.”

“Well done also to Bríd McShane, John Williams, Nigel Clegg, Brian Moore, Danny Gibson, Thomas Murray, Faye Walker, Mary Jo Cunningham, John Clarke, Dermot Mathers and Aidan Carroll whose photos also feature in the calendar.”

He added: “Thanks must go to my fellow judges, Cllr Terry Andrews (Deputy Chairperson of Newry, Mourne and Down District Council), Dessie Patterson (Chairperson of the Mourne Heritage Trust Board) and photographer Caoilfionn Murphy O’Hanlon.

Cllr Terry Andrews, Deputy Chairperson of Newry, Mourne and Down District Council also congratulated all of the competition winners and finalists and expressed his thanks to his fellow judges, saying “I want to thank my fellow judges Mayor of Ards and North Down Borough Council, Alderman Bill Keery, Mourne Heritage Trust Board Member Dessie Patterson and Caoilfionn Murphy O’Hanlon, Photographer. It was with great difficulty, we picked the winners. All the photographs were excellent with the pictures picked to showcase each of the AONBs equally.”

He added “ The calendar should be available at the Visitor Information Center Newcastle, the Council Offices in Downpatrick, the Ring of Gullion Office in Crossmaglen and the Visitor Information Point in Slieve Gullion Forest Park and Newry. There is a limited amount, so get them before they are gone.”
