Migration

With every season there is change and movement on Strangford Lough.

In winter the northern sandflats are thronged with thousands of birds that depart in the Spring.

In summer the acrobatic flight and sharp calls of terns feature, but by Autumn they are preparing to head further south.

Throughout the world millions of birds fly thousands of miles on migration journeys each year.

Fish such as eels and sea trout also migrate.

While individuals may not survive, on the whole the species benefits.

They travel the globe for suitable places for nesting, good food, seasonal food, and to avoid bad weather.
