Porpoise and Otters

Porpoise
Porpoise are small whales, about two meters long,  often seen from the shore travelling at speed with the tides that flow through the Narrows. While they are generally wary of boats, sailors often have the thrill of spotting schools of porpoise in the Lough  and some individuals will come up close.  Bottle nosed dolphins are considerably larger than porpoise and are occasional visitors.  Pilot whales and killer whales have also been spotted from time to time.

Otters
Otters are very elusive animals usually only seen at dawn or dusk but they are remarakbly common around the Lough. they can often be seen slipping in and out of the water and foraging on and near the shore.  Sheltered  rock and boulder shores are favoured habitats.
