The Lough is one of the most important breeding sites in Ireland for common seals, despite a decline in numbers. Small numbers of grey seals are also present. Porpoise and otters can also be found in Strangford Lough. Portaferry-based Exploris, the Northern Ireland Aquarium, houses a purpose built Seal Sanctuary, which provides for the rescue, rehabilitation and release of orphaned, injured or sick seal pups.
