 The Turn O'The Tide project to date has funded three Media Production Initiatives for local groups. Firstly in 2009, again in 2010 and lastly in 2011.
A group of 12 young people from Crossgar and Killyleagh, u nder the guidance of South Eastern Education and Library Board created a film about Strangford Lough interviewing fishermen, ecologists, technicians on the SeaGen underwater turbine, they encountered the Lough's wildlife and built heritage in the area and sharpened their media skills in the process.
A second group of novice filmmakers from AMH New Horizons Downpatrick, premiered their production of ‘Strangford Lough, The land, the place, the people’ in May 2010. A short film capturing the exceptional beauty of the Lough and its surrounding shores as well as interviews with specialists and local people that live in the nearby villages and towns.
The third group was a Portaferry youth group, under the guidance of SLLP and the Poratferry Community Collective, that looked at the social changes in the lives of those that live along side the Lough. The group of 15 young adults undertook two evenings training and two days of filming, interviewing across the generations of the local people of Portaferry.
All the projects has provided an opportunity for local groups, to get hands-on experience of producing a video including recording, script writing and editing while working with professional media education providers and specialists, using the Lough as subject matter.
The aim of the project was to engage youth in the area with the heritage and culture of Strangford Lough by appealing to them via a popular media – creative audio visual production.
Ultimately we hoped the project would;
- Allow the participants to gain a greater knowledge and insight to the history, background, culture, livelihoods and environment .
- Create opportunites for future related projects.
- Leave a legacy for future generations to watch.
