Tourism
There is potential for tourism to play a greater role in the local economy, and fairly small increases in numbers would represent significant percentage gains for local businesses. However, future development should be in character with the area, and links between natural assets and tourism revenue should be more tangible to avoid the perception that conservation interests are inhibiting economic development of the area.
Some current initatives:
Information panels and booklets
A review of on site information signage incorporating sites in Lecale to the suite already developed around Strangford Lough, with accompanying booklet.
Tourism Destination Management
- the NITB and local councils are working with businesses and other tourism and recreation interests to develop the area as a branded destination in keeping with other destination areas such as "The Mournes".
Mourne Coastal Route
- a new (brown signed) route which will take motorists along the A2 down the outer Ards Peninsula across the Narrows, through Lecale and along the Mournes to Newry.
St Patrick Signature Project
- signage and leaflets highlighted the area's christian heritage
