Newtownards
Newtownards, the main town of the Ards Peninsula, is situated at the northern end of
Strangford Lough. Scrabo Tower (standing 100 ft high), sits in Scrabo Country Park, on a hill above Newtownards. It was built after the famine in 1857 in memory of the Third Marquis of Londonderry for his work to help the poor and hungry during the famine. From the hill there are spectacular views of Strangford Lough and the tower is visible from many parts of Strangford and Lecale.
The Town Hall in Conway Square is thought to be Northern Ireland's finest Georgian Town Hall. It now houses the Ards Arts Centre. Ards Tourism operate the Tourist Information Centre and craft centre in nearby Regent Street.
