Windsurfing
Windsurfing (or sail boarding) has become increasingly popular over recent years, particularly at Cunningburn, Kircubbin and Whiterock.
The majority of windsurfing on Strangford Lough is affiliated with RYA Clubs and training centres. Little depth of water is required and insulating suits enable enthusiasts to sail throughout the year when weather permits. Typically up to 50 windsurfers would be afloat during a summer weekend on the Lough. The Green Blue Code of Practice applies to windsurfers as well as to sailors, for more information

Kitesurfing
There is also some kitesurfing in Strangford Lough, again mainly at the north end, around Cunningburn. Riders prefer an onshore wind which means they have to be prepared to travel to different spots depending on wind direction. When the wind is from the north they will generally head to the north coast to the Causeway coast beaches and when it’s from the south Tyrella Beach in County Down is the most popular location.
