Dog Walking
Islandhill at the north of end the Lough is by far the most popular site on Strangford Lough
for dog walking and exercising. The site is important as it allows visitors to view various birds especially Brent Geese and wintering waders with minimal disturbance. Visitors can either view the Lough from the elevated car park or from Rough Island.
Dog Fouling is an offence under the Litter (NI) Order 1994 and a fixed penalty fine can be issued. There are exceptions to lifting on agricultural land and in forested areas.
People are asked to keep dogs under control all around Strangford Lough, especially at the beginning of the incoming overwintering bird migration in October / November. The Dogs (NI) Order 1983 requires that dogs should be kept under control around livestock.
